In reading and literature we will...
Read a variety of literature genres including fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and biographies.
Choose books at their own independent reading levels.
Understand the author's purpose for writing text.
Read and discuss literature as a whole class and with a small group.
Read independently and respond to literature through writing.
Identify and use text features like the table of contents, glossary, captions, and illustrations.
Learn about the plot and explore character development in stories.
Find the main idea and details in text.
Compare and contrast types of literature, themes, and characters.
Identify situations of cause and effect, and distinguish fact from opinion.
Use context clues to find the meaning of unknown words.
Learn to alphabetize words.
Look for rhyming words and words with the same beginning sounds (alliteration).
Break down words by beginning, middle, and end sounds, as well as root words, prefixes, and suffixes.
Use reference sources such as dictionaries, encyclopedias, thesauruses, and atlases.
Analyze literature, summarize, and provide evidence from the text to support their understanding.
